Step 3 in creating a blissful life is to go the extra mile for yourself. That really just means loving yourself enough that you nurture yourself and don’t cut corners while you’re doing it.

When you’re expecting company for dinner, you usually take time to make the table look nice, or maybe you light some candles. You go out of your way to nurture the people who come over. Do you do any of that for yourself? When was the last time you got your nails done? Or made yourself your favorite food for dinner?

Self-care is so important because it sends a message to your brain that you’re worthy of care and nurturing.

I was making lunch for myself one day and my husband came into the kitchen and said, “That’s what you’re eating? Why don’t you put some spices on that?” Usually we eat our meals together, but he was going to work early that day, so I was just throwing something together quickly without any of the special touches that we enjoy when we prepare food together. He grabbed some dill out of the cabinet, and made me make the effort to slice some olives. By the time he left, I was sitting down to a gourmet lunch! I realized that I needed to start treating myself with the same love and care that I give to both of us.

What can you do for yourself that’s extra special?

I make my entire house smell wonderful with an essential oil diffuser. I keep the door to my office open so I can enjoy that even while I’m working. Essential oils are wonderful for influencing your mood. You can get these online or in any health food store. My favorite oils to mix together are Ylang Ylang and Lavender. I have two diffusers. I keep one in the bedroom and one in the living room. It makes my surroundings feel like heaven. (I got this diffuser for less than $30 on Amazon, btw.)

How can you go the extra mile for yourself? I eat the best chocolate every day! And I take lots of baths. And I take the trouble to put essential oils or epsom salts in it. I never take a bath in plain water.

What can you do that makes life in your home feel better? You don’t have to spend a ton of money! Those oil diffusers are cheap and they work! Just clearing clutter makes me feel better. Cleaning and picking up after myself makes me feel that I’m in control of how I feel in my home.

If you don’t have a place where you can shut the rest of the world out, it’s important to create a meditation space or a place where you can go and read. Last year, I converted my upstairs closet into a little meditation space. I didn’t spend any money, I just rearranged things a bit.

Go the extra mile when it comes to taking good care of yourself. You deserve it. You deserve to bring as much joy, pleasure, and comfort into your day as possible. Why not?
